This is not a royal matter

One of the main features is that our characters are not supposed to do menial work due to their status: well, where has it been seen that a noble lord planted and harvested crops, worked on a construction site or felled a forest? This is what the peasants are meant for – the various rabble that flock to our settlement from the surrounding area, attracted by rumors about the emergence of a new village. It is the peasants who work hard, spending the night in barracks for a dozen people and eating rutabaga stew, while the nobles are supposedly just having fun.

However, this impression is deceptive: the nobles also do not sit idle. Every productive place, be it a field, a tavern, a sawmill, or even a scaffold, needs a leader, whose role is played by one of the lords. The player chooses who will manage specific affairs: the operation of each building requires periodic visits from the authorities, otherwise the peasants will not even think of rolling up their sleeves. It is not such an easy task to command: given the gradually increasing number of industries that need an authoritative hand, some lords can run from one building to another all day, giving instructions.

Do not forget that ordinary residents may remain “pawns” with sets of properties, thoughts and skills, but they cannot be controlled in any way at all: all interaction occurs only with the help of lords. It turned out, in my opinion, interesting: a village full of peasants looks alive, and we have the opportunity to focus on several characters. Moreover, there is already enough microcontrol here – it is with it, more precisely with the visualization of control and informing the player, in Norland most problems.

It was in vain that I had a fight with the neighboring ruler – his army is many times stronger than mine, so we will definitely lose this battle.

Pot, don’t cook

There are so many features here that it’s not at all easy to understand this wealth. At the same time, it cannot be said that they are poorly developed – on the contrary, each one is important. The weakest point is the battle: for now it’s just crowd-on-crowd fights, where the lords act as commanders. But, according to the developers, it is battles that they are working on at the moment – most likely, there will be formations, a greater impact on morale, long-range weapons and other features.

Other mechanics are fine with depth. Take religion for example. Sinful actions burn the soul, requiring confession from the bishop, and without daily prayer life is not sweet. However, you shouldn’t overdo it either – there is a risk of turning residents into fanatics. Those who are seized with religious ecstasy do not care about any pain – it even brings pleasure. However, if the fanatics are unhappy for any other reason, there will be a riot. The local bishop, although he belongs to the noble class, does not belong to your family, so you should not quarrel with him: the Inquisition will definitely come to the defense of the clergyman, and he is closer to religious commoners than the overlord.

As for the economy, here we have a full-fledged simulation of a closed system. Your residents receive money and buy food and other goods in markets where the player controls prices. Moreover, the only source of gold is a trade caravan that regularly visits the settlement. You have to monitor not only the debit and credit of your faction, but also to ensure that every peasant has money for food at least: poverty leads to a bad mood, and that, in turn, is synonymous with crime. You don’t want the village to turn into a haven for thugs who will steal all the valuables from the treasury?

Don’t forget that your settlement is far from the only one on the world map. There are not only small villages suitable only for collecting tribute, but also cities of other noble families, and the possibilities of interaction with them are reminiscent of Crusader Kings . You can go on a trip for different purposes: just to visit (a heart-to-heart chat will improve your mood and help improve relationships); in search of a bride or groom for the growing offspring; to conclude a trade deal or bribe one of the lords. Neighbors are also trying to interact in a similar way, both with each other and with our faction – the world looks alive.

For lovers of complexity, the developers have prepared a special surprise: after some time, the Unholy Horde appears on the border of the map, sweeping away everything in its path – the confrontation with it should become the final challenge for the player and a test of the strength of the kingdom he has built.

Sometimes it seems that Norland overloaded with features, but for me this is even a plus – I like to learn something new, opening up opportunities as I progress. The problem is that the learning curve here is too steep – everything falls on you at once. Now, of course, this no longer interferes, but at first it’s easy to get lost in learning the mechanics. There is, apparently, no other way – only with this approach can one achieve a simulation of the life not of an individual hero or a handful of colonists, but of an entire settlement in an ever-changing world.

As often happens, the wealth of opportunities comes with technical challenges. If you don’t have to pay much attention to bugs, then the attractive interface in terms of functionality clearly does not keep up with the abundance of features: it’s easy to miss an important detail here. This aspect primarily requires polishing, and in some places – serious changes. Otherwise, it will be quite difficult to play – the barrier to entry here is quite high.

However, the project is very, very promising: it seems that in the full version we will have the same Story Generating Strategy that the developers promise.

A report straight from the depths of the mind, which tasted the power of machinima, and realized that it was not worth doing… In fact, I want to say a lot, but I will say little, because I am very bad at constructing logic and thought itself, and you may not understand what comes out well. CHAPTER ONE: Getting out of the shit..

6:23:02 – morning, I don’t remember what happened last time, yesterday, it seems… I woke up in some strange place. Three details immediately caught my eye: huge steel walls, four residential buildings and a yellow forklift..

Let’s start with the fact that I will not call myself a “fan” or “admirer” of this and that, but I will say that there is something in this engine that is not just close to the heart, but something that is dear and warm… Like the warmth of a mother or something like that. In general, let’s just say that for me the “Source” engine is a kind of home. During periods of not very easy life, the only outlet for me was “Half-life 2”, and later “Garry’s mod”.

It was thanks to him that I became acquainted with all this movement! Coming home from school, I turned on Garik, went to my favorite cards and did what I wanted! Sometimes, until late in the evening, without having done my homework, I would shoot zombies and watch themed videos on YouTube (then I had just discovered the Internet, in 2010.). Plus, I don’t remember how, but I came across some community on VK, it seems, and started communicating with people like me..

He’s dead, he’s killed, by us..

Well, I even got a friend involved in this topic and together we found hacked Steam, so to speak, and started playing pirated games online. With the people. And then… Then 2011 struck, when my hard drive crashed for the first time (Maxim, your card can swallow).

There was no limit to sadness. I didn’t really have time to plunge into the culture of “Garik” and the community of the “Source” engine before it was all taken away from me! Understand, you felt some kind of brotherhood when huge hordes of these people form a gang, break your car, assembled from shit and sticks, break your barricades, and you and your friend, Kleiners and other models defend the last shelf nailed to one “Weld”!

By the way, I always liked the design of maps in “Source” games. This mixture of some Soviet modernism and childhood dreams, where you absorb the first with your mother’s milk and continue to observe throughout your life… Or maybe you should just do something normal, no, not an option in our vicious world, in which your ass is more expensive than a person stuck in a car after an accident with a drunken deputy, in a second car! And the second, however, due to age, all this just wants to break out. Like a ticking headache or sadness that has darkened your morning… And all this feels very warm and trembling..

In “Garry’s mod”, “Half-life 2” and “CS: Source”, especially, some kind of doom is clearly felt.On all these maps from “Source”, directly, as has been said by many, about sounds (specifically ambient in the “Source” games), you really find yourself in some kind of vacuum, where there is only you and this world that, as it seems to you, you once saw in dreams or in distant childhood… You hear some sounds, ambient and this eternal, somewhere distant, siren of GO, which does not leave on any map.As if..

The most unique experience for me was trying to write my own lore for the world of “Source” and its main games! More precisely, stories.

Now everything is already lost, along with that hard drive… But there is something that I remember very well to this day. From Laura:

And the funny thing is that all this crap started in 2012, when YouTube introduced stricter copyright rules.Previously, it was possible to insert any music, for example, into a video, well, with the exception of the most famous one, but even this was not so critical. It’s trite, no left-wing “office” could throw you a strike and write: – you, damn it, ouel (?), we own 1% of shares from the company of this product, so if you don’t want problems, cut out the video.It’s like coming into a room, saying that you know where the maniac is, and then locking the room and saying that you are all maniacs, but it doesn’t work that way.

CHAPTER TWO: I’m starting to dive..

Once in my life, I had the opportunity to visit a real studio where they make radio and other nonsense of our time. But it was interesting… though not quite in the way you might think.However, there is an old expression that I heard on the bus, getting there in the terrible heat, right in the morning, it told me – “there is such a fool, and he will always be”, this is about me. As always, exactly to the point..

One day, I was sitting with my colleagues in the back room, and was discussing in my head whether it was possible to take a knife and cut someone’s throat. This knife was on the table. If you thought it would be easy, you were wrong. But why do I focus so much on some thoughts that are not connected at all?? It’s just that all these were thoughts before the trip, but during it – nothing, not a single thought ran through like a rat or even flew by – I was depressed.Frightening thoughts flew above me like crows that I was just trying to figure out if I would have enough change after the trip. To buy yourself something.

As a result, I decided to discard all the pathos of my speeches and go to a country called “Reality”.

Machinima has become a narrow genre, but still a genre in which people do something and not banal war games or a film adaptation in the halva universe, but something more, something that already attracts a separate type of creativity.For me, personally, machinima is both a platform and a rehearsal for a big movie, which I want to do in the future. Or write books, by the way, I’m already writing one and have even finished it.

A completely disgusting comment system, most of it is simply not displayed, the function to send a private message to the channel has disappeared, now you can only write in the community or in comments (!).

However, we are not thinking about as always. We think about the essentials or what will bring us pleasure. But that’s not true.

Pleasure comes only when you turn off thoughts and concentrate on something personal, or maybe something present. Lame argumentation is not the greatest problem, really, but is it a problem at all?? I don’t know, I mean, yes, it’s a problem, but is it as big as you might think?? No, just a problem that can be solved. And this is the whole gmod, machinima based on it, such was the time, it’s true, it partially remains, but the problem is something else, namely, Russian communism.

And now, only now, fully, I can conclude that the trip had a positive impact on me, but there was one more thing – I was not going to share this, but I already did it… Peace came when I had already arrived home, and then I understood an important thought: the heat had gone, there was no money left to buy something, I was tired, my glasses fell into the mud, and I understood only one thing… We are fish in this life, and God is a fisherman… The aquarium is great and small, but since we are caught, it means we haven’t died yet..

Briefly, my creative path can be divided into three categories: machinima, book, secret project.

This project, like others in my life, personifies me as a dark something rushing in the darkness, through the pouring rain, and I do not thirst for retribution, I thirst for darkness and the depths that it holds in its halls, I thirst for beauty, violence and lust, like in the good old days, when no one could condemn you for the desire to live and betray it with the aroma of sex, drugs and alcohol, but I am not an angel bringing peace, but I’m not a demon bringing death, I’m a person who brings fear and the desire to overcome it, I’m a person who wants… Find your way.

The words were written a long time ago, for my machinima, which I filmed and even inserted these words, but it did not help her, just as the Internet cannot help a person if he wants to release himself..

The dream went well for such a place. I also forgot to write that there is technology here. It seems to be working: a truck, a buggy and an ATV..

At one time, I personally, for machinima, tried to promote to the masses the idea that it should develop itself into a full-fledged cinema.

That is, to become a branch of cinema, like animation, which at first was an experiment, and today, sometimes, can gross more than a traditional film. But the thing is that no one wanted to listen to me, in a global sense. And the result? Sad.

It’s 2022 in our yard, and we are still riveting machinima at the level of 2010-15, approximately. And foreign authors, already in those years, simultaneously created masterpieces for centuries, like “Shelf Life,” and ALREADY promoted machinima into a separate direction – cinema, animation, machinima.

They, precisely, had a goal and a clear model of behavior for a new direction. Yes, they didn’t succeed very well, otherwise we would have been able to watch machinima on TV in the evening or on all those Netflixes. But! They tried.

Times are different now, a lot has been done better, things have been streamlined, there are additional. ways to get somewhere, which means we need to continue to develop. That’s why the community is dead, especially the Russian one – no one wants to develop machinima. Namely, in the direction in which it needs to be done.

A simple analogy, art would become art, in the traditional sense, and would have success and its audience, even now, if at a certain moment, suddenly, the Renaissance had not arrived? No. And, in this case, the people themselves, as carriers of the cultural code, would be in question.We ourselves would most likely still be living in an environment. centuries.

Well, or we would have a very weak culture, despite progress, although it’s hard for me to imagine, because these concepts are related. Actually, the conclusion is obvious (the first one so far) – we need a revival. Otherwise we will remain in “ancient times”.

My First Machinima..

All sorts of things happened. I remember, I stupidly wake up in the morning, get ready for school, then come back, with the thought that now I’ll go to Garik, film and post it on the channel, when I went to YouTube – such a channel does not exist (it was stolen…).

Then, in 2012, it seems, he created the SelyavanTV channel, which, by the way, is still alive, well, that is, like a ghost. It has not been deleted, but videos are no longer posted there. I couldn’t restore access to it, I forgot everything, passwords, etc…

Realistically, now, you won’t make machinima, in a good way, because it’s fashionable, you’ll do it because you want to do it. Yes, there are directions, like mine and sims, but that’s a separate conversation. All this takes me back to the moment when I decided to start the path of a machinist (again).

After this news, Noctis loses his temper and begins to act impulsively, trying to return to the city with his friends. However, imperial checkpoints prevent this from happening.

It sounds damn delicious, you must agree: somewhere inside the inner child-explorer begins to lick his lips. And there were a lot of such adventure-hungry children: the project already at the concept stage acquired an unimaginable number of fans. However, we have already heard more than once from different companies about a “living open world”, and we know that quality is often inversely proportional to quantity, especially when we are talking about an entire randomly generated universe. Were our fears justified??

Let’s start with the fact that No Man’s Sky costs $60, which, for a second, is almost half the cost of living today. A game that has a similar price tag automatically ranks with AAA projects, and the demand from it is corresponding. So, as an AAA project, No Man’s Sky doesn’t hold up at all. Yes, for developers this could be a dream game, a childhood fantasy come true. This is their children’s gouache drawing – naive, ridiculous, but their own. For a player, this is also an expensive purchase, and not everyone is ready to shell out four thousand rubles for a child’s, albeit sincere, daub.

The game opens in a classic (read: hackneyed) way for a survival adventure: we come to our senses at a broken trough, on which, after repairs, we will have to explore the galaxy. Space battles are meaningless and merciless – forget about the dynamic and intense battles of some Elite Dangerous, ship control is limited to WASD, two acceleration buttons and mouse buttons, and is absolutely not suitable for arcade brawls (no application was made for depth). At the same time, the opponents turn out to be surprisingly toothy: in my experience, running into Sentinel ships is the only way to die in the game. Fortunately, with the installation of homing missiles, space battles cease to be annoying, although they still do not cause joy.

Let’s return to research – the main activity in the game. To be honest, the developers should have left only this component, without scattering themselves on everything else – a sort of ABZÛ about space and unknown worlds. Here, however, everything again depends on luck – sometimes the new planet turns out to be just another rocky wasteland, twisted into a ball, and sometimes there are beautiful forests, burning with yellow leaves and inhabited by wonderful primates. There are several points of interest on the planets: these are alien bases, where you can meet representatives of extraterrestrial civilizations, and ancient monoliths, from which you can learn new words for communicating with aliens, and broken ships awaiting repair, and simply lighthouses that perpetuate the quirks of the landscape… However, by the fourth planet you almost certainly know what awaits you at any of these points, or rather, you know what generator will be chosen from. There are no complaints about his work, he may be trying, but he only has few initial blocks to work with, and this is felt more and more with each planet visited, when once again you meet a Chupacabra, differing from the previous one only in the number of horns on the ridge.

Another problem that comes to the fore quite early on: even a planet with a dominance of animals and bases feels uninhabited at best, dead at worst. The fact is that there are two types of animals: cowardly friendly ones (in fear they cut circles around the player, you can feed them with resources for the sake of resources) and evil heel-biters (in a rage they run at the player in a straight line, resting on the stones, you can feed them with your own ass for some unknown reason), and, as Butusov once sang, “it’s equally boring to go with both of them.”. As for the aliens, interaction with them turned out to be painfully scant. You can meet them exclusively at bases, where upon first contact they give simple quests, usually boiling down to choosing one of three answer options (learned words to help!); then for a small amount of resources they offer several services (learn a word, repair a ship) depending on the level of reputation. It’s a paradox, but you learn much more about the history and culture of the few races that populate the game world from “dialogues” with monoliths than from its living representatives.
The same emptiness fills space. Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t think that space was an exclusively populated place, but why the hell aren’t there any ships in the system?? However, once you get to the space station, it immediately becomes the busiest place in the universe – the flow of ships is simply endless. This is the appearance of life – offensively cheap and absolutely implausible.

By the way, in all this it was completely forgotten that the game has a plot. Yes, yes, imagine. And its implementation in a randomly generated world, even on paper, seems like a non-trivial task. It is solved as follows: from the very beginning the player is given obvious goals – to repair the ship, leave the planet – and the player fulfills them, because this is exactly what he wants without any hints. Then the plot suggests assembling an engine for hyperjumps, visiting another system, and finding a new recipe in it… On the one hand, this is a very correct approach, on the other hand, at some point you begin to notice a certain obsession – it is very difficult to resist the beacon on the map pointing to another conditional factory, and you supposedly accidentally bump into quest buildings in the middle of the plain. In a word, the illusion of randomness of everything that happens fades away quite quickly, but otherwise the plot is one of the points that No Man’s Sky copes with more often than not.
And the game also copes with creating an atmosphere – in some places. The first planet, the first spacewalk, the first few hours are frankly captivating, and although over time the feeling of discovery becomes increasingly devalued, for n boring minutes/hours there is one or two wow moments. By the way, the player’s only companion in this world of loneliness will be music. Local melodies are not bad, but disposable. Don’t get me wrong, it’s quite good, but like everything else in this game, it’s only for the beginning, so I recommend choosing your own playlist. Believe me, exploring planets while listening to your favorite songs can give you many moments of true pleasure: personally, I really enjoy playing something like The Everly Brothers – All I Have To Do Is Dream, feeling like Star-Lord from Guardians of the Galaxy. If you decide to buy, be sure to try it.

And finally, a little more about the sad. As mentioned earlier, optimization on PC is terrible. I don’t have the weakest machine by modern standards, and it wheezed and cursed, trying to produce a stable 30 frames per second. It turned out so-so even on low settings. The way the space ahead is gradually loading causes universal sadness. And never fly over the planet at the level of the clouds – their graininess can cause a stroke even in an experienced space ace.
